Ages: (6 and above): This arts-integrated class begins with a reading of Russian folklore tale, “Vasilisa the Wise,” where students are encouraged to talk about the importance of developing their inner voices of courage and guidance. The story of Vasilisa is about a strong little girl who is given a doll in her likeness by her mother to protect her along her journeys. Vasilisa looks to the doll for advice and guidance, as a metaphor for looking to one’s own inner voice for confidence and courage. Through this four-week class, the students will learn some basic sewing techniques to create their own doll of choice (i.e. animal, little girl, little boy or other figure). They will cut-out clothing and fashion hair to clothe their dolls as well. We will use as many recyclable materials as possible.
